Summary

Wilhelm is a capitalist. He is also a vampire, and very aware of the irony, but the point is: he believes in economics, in trade, and in enlightened self-interest. It is in his interest that the human race survive, flourish, and see him as an ally, so he bends his powers and wealth to that end. He has twisted the normally monstrous ethics of a vampire into something that could almost seem like heroism, when viewed from a certain distance. He protects and guides the humans under his care, but then, so does a shepherd - and as friendly as that sounds, in the end it's not the shepherd who gets shorn.

Background

"Wilhelm" likes to play the bohemian vampire trope to the hilt sometimes, and will often drop sinister hints about having been a tenth-century Transylvanian duke or having tasted various historical figures over the centuries. The truth is unknowable - his "accent" when speaking English is a muddled joke he uses for his own amusement, culled from horror films, while in German his accent is quite genuine and utterly unplaceable, as if he were working from a mother tongue that no longer exists.

Point being: he's old, but just how old is something he seems to deliberately hide.

At the very least, he was alive for the industrial revolution, and seems to have been a personal friend of Adam Smith's, who had a profound effect on him. It changed Wilhelm from a predator to a capitalist - he realized he didn't need to stalk humans, he could simply buy them. From this somewhat starkly monstrous start, however, he began to learn that the closer he tied himself to humanity, the easier life became. The relationship did not need to be exploitative - the humans could be downright happy to offer their blood if they were getting a fair trade. He found himself in the position of being a patron of the arts and struggling students, and then having to protect them from other, slightly less enlightened vampires.

The other vampires - his sire in particular - did not appreciate this. Wilhelm has become a pariah among his own people, but given that his own kind are psychotic monsters, he feels he has traded up.

Over the centuries his philosophy has slowly firmed into the uncompromising belief in human survival (and his role in it) that guides him today.
